07/03/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Hanley Ramirez will try to stretch his franchise-record RBI streak to 11 games this evening when the Florida Marlins begin a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Land Shark Stadium.
Florida, meanwhile, has won eight of its last 11 games and has moved into a tie atop the NL East with the struggling Philadelphia Phillies.
Ramirez has been a huge reason behind the latest surge, as he has hit .475 (19-for-40) with five homers and 24 RBI over the last 10 games, knocking in at least one run in each of those contests.
"They are doing a good job getting on base," said Ramirez, who banged out eight hits and seven RBI in the Marlins' recent three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals. "It's a team, not just me."
His RBI streak, which is the longest ever by an NL shortstop, is also the longest in the majors since Garret Anderson had a 12-game run from August 26- September 7, 2007, while with the Los Angles Angels.
Hoping to keep the Marlins atop the division tonight will be 22-year-old right-hander Chris Volstad, who has just one win over his last six starts. Volstad did not factor in the decision of his team's 3-2 loss to Tampa on Saturday, as he allowed a pair of runs and five hits in six innings.
Volstad, who is 5-7 with a 4.63 earned run average on the season, has never faced the Pirates.
Pittsburgh will counter with righty Charlie Morton, who is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in three starts for the Bucs. Morton, acquired from Atlanta in the Nate McLouth deal, absorbed his first loss of the season on Sunday against Kansas City, which reached him for three runs and seven hits in five innings.
This will be Morton's fourth-ever start against the Marlins and is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in the three previous encounters.
The Pirates lost in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday, as they blew an early five-run lead, only to rally with three runs in the ninth to send the game to extra innings, before dropping a 9-8 decision to the New York Mets in the makeup contest of a postponed June 3 game from PNC Park.
Garrett Jones went 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored for the Pirates, losers in four of their last five. Adam LaRoche launched a two-run home run, and Robinzon Diaz also posted three hits and knocked in a pair.
Matt Capps (1-4) surrendered the go-ahead run in the 10th for the loss. Paul Maholm didn't make it out of the fifth during his start, touched for 11 hits and six runs over 4 1/3 frames.
"I was very proud of the way our guys batted back," Pirates manager John Russell said. "It's easy just to fold up, especially when Rodriguez comes in the game...I was really proud of the effort today."
Pittsburgh swept a three-game set from the Marlins in April and has won four straight and five of the last six matchups in the series.

Problem with Bears?
Chicago, IL - New Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and star linebacker Brian Urlacher shot down reports of a rift, saying they're simply not true.
"There's nothing between us," Cutler said Thursday, when he reported to training camp. "I just want to put that to rest. There never has been anything between us."
Urlacher added: "I never said what I was quoted as saying and that's it. I have a lot of respect for Jay. I think Jay knows that."
Former Bears receiver Bobby Wade caused a stir when he told Minneapolis radio station KFAN-AM that Urlacher used a profanity while questioning Cutler's manhood during a conversation in Las Vegas last weekend. Wade, who now plays for the Vikings, said Urlacher used a profane version of the word "wimp" during the interview that had to be edited out.

"I wouldn't go face-to-face with Brian, anyway," Cutler said. "No, that's never happened. I've hung out with Brian away from the facility numerous times and we've always gotten along."
Urlacher, noting he was limited by a groin injury, denied the reports in an interview with the Chicago Tribune and did it again when he reported to camp.
"I didn't practice this summer, so I don't know how I would fight the guy if I didn't practice," Urlacher said. "We have no problems. I'm excited about football starting. I'm excited to have him as our quarterback."
Why would Wade say that?
"I don't know," Urlacher said. "Maybe he's jealous because we have a good quarterback now."
Cutler said the first he heard of any friction was when he got a call from Urlacher to clear the air. Urlacher, however, said he had already taken several calls from teammates wondering if the reports were true when Cutler phoned.
"He called me and I said, What's up (expletive), what are you doing?'" a grinning Urlacher said, uttering the same word he allegedly used with Wade. "It's so dumb to me that this even got to this point, but it did and then here we are."

Smith said another quarterback - Michael Vick - deserves one, although he doesn't see it happening with the Bears, who lack an experienced backup. The former Atlanta Falcons star, who served a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring, said Thursday he is getting close to signing with a pro football team.
"A second chance, like everyone in society who has paid their debt to society," Smith said. "He deserves a second chance. As far as we're concerned, we like this team that we have right now."

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.
The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.
De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.
Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.
But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
